Pre-med advice for the culture

our mission:
Help the culture
get the white coat

Race and Medicine
It's not a hidden secret that minorities have lacked representation in the doctor workforce. Far too often, our absence has been acknowledged, yet the "school to white coat " pipeline is still broken for aspiring doctors of color. Efforts and programs have been made, yet not far-reaching enough to bridge the massive gap in diversity in the medical field. Diversity in medicine has been more of an optional checkbox than a mandate to ensure protection of black and brown bodies that have been historically received poor access to quality health care.

pdm shadowing program
Clinical experiences are a MUST for all pre-meds who want to secure the white coat. However, many minorities are first generation doctors and don't have connections with physicians to gain this experience. Through our program, we offer pre-med students opportunity to shadow with physicians and a chance to earn a physician letter of recommendation upon successful completion in order to become a more competitive applicant.
white coat preneur
One of the biggest obstacles associated with becoming a doctor is paying for the pre-med process. At PDM, we teach our future doctors how to develop the entrepreneurial spirit and launch side hustles that can help finance some of the the many expenses that come with securing the white coat.

advocacy
Project Diversify Medicine has leveraged our voice to enact change at the legislative level through letter writing campaigns to advocate for the passing of legislation to help preserve the training hospital for Howard University College of Medicine which serves as one of the largest producers of black doctors. We also played an integral role in saving the Health Careers Opportunity Program which was on the verge of being defended by the U.S. Senate until our community voiced the need to preserve this pipeline for aspiring minority doctors through a letter writing campaign.
documentary
Project Diversify Medicine and Founder Dr. Ashley Denmark were featured in a documentary in 2019, entitled Empowered Voices: More Than Enough to Heal. This documentary created by American Heart Association which explores the impact of black doctors, the shortage of minority doctors, value of HBCU's in premed education and strengthening the minority pipeline to medical school.

Dr. Denmark grew up within blocks of Ferguson, Missouri and was inspired to become a physician since she was child. Her journey into healthcare didn't start in a white coat, but rather in the food and nutrition staff at local BJC Hospital in St. Louis Mo. Her story clearly didn't end there, but came full circle in 2018 as she returned to BJC Medical Group Missouri as the FIRST BLACK FEMALE Family Medicine Physician for Missouri Baptist Medical Center since it's opening more than 130 years ago.
